Chieng Di 1 Community Tourism Village

Introduce

Established in 2000, Chieng Di 1 Village is currently home to 174 households and 780 residents from five ethnic groups living in harmony. Leveraging its natural advantages, proximity to National Highway 6, and location within the Moc Chau National Tourism Area, the village has actively developed community-based tourism since 2019. Primarily inhabited by the Hmong and Dao people, the village preserves a wealth of traditional values, including khen panpipe melodies, folk dances, vibrant costumes, and handicraft trades closely linked to daily life. With its stunning scenery, fresh climate, and rich cultural heritage, Chieng Di 1 (Van Ho District, Son La Province) has become a magnetic destination for sightseeing and retreats.

Chieng Di 1 is beautiful in every season. In spring, the village is radiant with plum and peach blossoms, covering the landscape in pure white and delicate pink. Summer brings lush green tea hills, while autumn sees golden and white mustard flower fields stretching across the land. In winter, the yellow of wild sunflowers peeking through the mist creates a peaceful, poetic atmosphere that invites exploration.

Mr. Vang A Thanh, Village Head, notes that locals diligently preserve traditions such as ethnic cuisine, folk games, musical instruments, and crafts like papermaking, blacksmithing, weaving, and beeswax batik printing. The village also boasts specialty agricultural products like te dau rice, man taro, peaches, plums, and "cat" mustard greens to serve tourism.

A Community Tourism Management Board was established, consisting of households involved in the industry. Members are sent on study tours to learn about business operations, cultural preservation, environmental protection, and hospitality skills. To increase local income, the village maintains a brocade weaving group and a bamboo souvenir group. Currently, 10 households have built resorts, homestays, and restaurants.

Every Saturday night, the village holds a night market. This is a gathering place for locals and tourists to buy handicrafts, textiles, and agricultural products. Here, visitors can experience pounding banh day (sticky rice cakes) with the Hmong, enjoy the bell dances of the Dao, watch the tha khenh dance, and savor authentic local dishes.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, a tourist from Nam Dinh, shared: "Staying here allowed us to experience the unique culture by eating and living with the locals. Enjoying specialties like dried buffalo meat, five-color sticky rice, and wild vegetable salad provided a relaxing and emotional escape for my family."

To support the village, in 2022, Van Ho District invested in a 2.5km lighting system to facilitate nighttime activities. Notably, the "Art_Stay - To the Mountains, Stay in the Village" community project—led by pianist Pho An My and various artists—has encouraged residents to restore traditional houses to prevent "concreting." These artists also transformed rigid concrete walls into colorful murals depicting the life and culture of the Hmong and Dao, creating impressive artistic highlights that harmonize with the natural landscape.
